About STP - sewage treatment plant

A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is an engineered facility that purifies wastewater from homes and businesses. Its goal is to remove harmful contaminants, organic matter, and pathogens so the water can be safely discharged into the environment or reused for purposes like gardening and flushing.
The sewage treatment process typically happens in three to four distinct stages:
1. Preliminary Treatment (Preparation)
  • Screening: Wastewater passes through metal screens to catch large solid objects like plastics, rags, and debris.
  • Grit Removal:
The water flows into a grit chamber where sand, gravel, and heavy solids settle to the bottom.
2. Primary Treatment (Sedimentation)
  • Clarification: Water enters large, flat-bottomed tanks where it sits still. Heavier organic solids sink to the bottom to form raw sludge, while lighter oils and grease float to the top.
  • Removal: The floating grease is skimmed off, and the settled sludge is pumped out for separate treatment.
3. Secondary Treatment (Biological)
  • Aeration: Naturally occurring, oxygen-loving bacteria are introduced to the wastewater in an aeration tank. These bacteria consume the dissolved and suspended organic pollutants.
  • Secondary Clarification: The mixture then moves to a secondary settling tank, where the bacteria clump together and sink to the bottom as "activated sludge"
4. Tertiary & Advanced Treatment (Disinfection)
  • Filtration & Nutrient Removal: The water undergoes final filtration through sand or membranes to remove any remaining fine particles.
  • Disinfection: To kill any remaining disease-causing bacteria or viruses, the water is treated with UV light, ozone, or a small amount of chlorine
